Christmas Concert; Saturday 20 December 2014
After a number of years without a regular Christmas performance (we used to have a regular Twelfth Night Concert, often with Cressbrook Band), we arranged a Christmas Concert, with the intention that this becomes the first of a new series. We invited Litton Band, a folk band formed less than a year ago, to be our guests. We were also extremely grateful for assistance from Mike Burrell and his son, Andrew, who arranged some wonderfully atmospheric lighting. This was seen to great effect with our first piece, James MacMillan's O Radiant Dawn; you can see our performance here. We are also grateful to Gerard Rogers, of Tideswell Community Players, for a number of lovely images of the performance, the lighting and the post-performance gathering for mince pies and mulled wine (seen here). We've had some very positive audience feedback and will be continuing the new series in 2015.
Carols in Chatsworth Stables Courtyard; Sunday 21 December 2014
For a number of years, we've accepted the invitation to sing carols in Chatsworth Stables Courtyard. They've an established format, with a choir alternating with a brass band (Youlgreave this year) for 20-40 minute sets from 12.30 to 3.30pm. It is always a lovely experience, even when the weather is not very kind. This year was particularly good, dry and relatively warm. Most importantly, was a lovely, appreciative audience. They particularly seemed to enjoy the more local carols, such as The Ilkley Shepherds and the Curly Hark (all the way from Eyam). For more information on the local carol tradition in South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire, see this link, especially their useful diary giving all the opportunites to sing (or just listen) to local carols and familiar favourites in the relaxed environment of a local pub.
Diary of Events.
With our new web site, we're starting a diary page to pull together a few notes on events we take part in, as well as any pictures, video or other recordings of our singing. These will not all be formal concerts, as we've sung in the open air at events such as Eroica Britannia, for Chistmas Fairs in Litton and Bakewell, and at Chatsworth Stables Courtyard. We'd love to have any feeback, via the Contacts page.
Presentation of cheque to Helen's Trust; Wednesday 18 February 2015
We were delighted to be joined by Zoe Woodward, Community Fundraiser for Helen's Trust at the start of our rehearsal on Wednesday 18 February, so that we could present her with a cheque for £457 the choir had raised for the Trust. Featured in the centre of the photo (L to R) are: our Treasurer, Richard Westaway, our Choral Director, Carol Bowns, Barbara Molteno (who, together with her late husband, Brian, benefited from the Trust's services), Zoe Woodward and Brooke Waddle, from Helen's Trust.
Concert with Bakewell Junior and Bakewell Infants Schools; Wednesday 9 March 2016
Early on the evening of Wednesday 9 March 2016, we sang with the children from Bakewell Church of England Infant School and Bakewell Methodist Junior School in Bakewell Methodist Church. There were several pieces we all sang together, including Irving Berlin's Simple Melody, Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah and Bob Chilcott's Like a Singing Bird. They were in very fine voice and absolutely full of musical energy, so we had to be at our best to match their hard work. We're on the right of the picture.
